What is National Medical Commission..?
National Medical Commission is a regulatory body formed with 33 members who regulate medical education and professionals. On September 25’ 2020, NMC has replaced the Medical Council of India i.e., MCI.
In January 2019 NMC was established for 6 months but later on, August 8’ 2019 a law was passed by the Parliament of India and the President of India approved it, to upkeep the National Medical Commission as a permanent regulating body.
NMC accredits the medical schools of India and Abroad, gives recognition to the medical degree, and monitors the activities of the medical practitioners and the infrastructure of medical institutions in India.

The decision passed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) that it has delisted all the Foreign Medical Colleges. Previously the Medical Council of India has provided a list of Foreign Medical Institutions for Medical courses or equivalent courses based upon the information from the Indian Embassy.
The Screening Test Regulations states that the candidate (Citizen of India or Overseas Citizen of India) obtained a primary medical qualification outside India from any Medical Institutions are abide to pass the Screening Test for obtaining the eligibility to practice in India.
The National Medical Commission clarifies that the regulatory body of Indian Medical Institutions does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions or Universities for MBBS or equivalent course in foreign countries.

National Medical Commission advises the students who are willing to study MBBS or equivalent course Abroad must confirm the fee structure, details of the course from the University or Institution concerned.

The Medical Council of India has a list of Medical Colleges Abroad providing medical studies to Indian students. This list was attached to the official website of the Medical Council of India (MCI) for the convenience of the Indian students. Before taking admission in any foreign college students’ prior duty was to dig into the List of MCI Approved Colleges. It was necessary because if the name of the medical college is not on the list previously students get cautious for not taking admission in the college.
Foreign Medical Graduates are required to appear for Screening Test in India. The candidates who wish to practice in India as a doctor are required to crack Foreign Medical Graduate Examination i.e. FMGE. The students who have acquired their medical degree from MCI approved college is only allowed to sit for FMGE after returning back to India.

Students taking admission in any foreign medical college must do some research work for taking MBBS Admission in Abroad. The student must meet the eligibility criteria of the particular college. The candidate must be NEET qualified, a mandatory section to be fulfilled for taking admission in any foreign college.
Previously, almost 500 medical colleges have been registered on the official website of the Medical Council of India. Despite the poor infrastructure, bilingual language, inappropriate hostel rooms, low standard medical education the students are fetching admission in those medical colleges just because they are MCI approved.
There were few medical colleges providing proper infrastructure, the better quality of education but they aren’t listed in MCI so the students were unable to take admission in those colleges. But from now students can take admission in any college because National Medical Commission delisted Medical Colleges in Abroad.
NMC is trying to escape from their duties…
In India, the Doctor-Patient ratio is not so good. The health sector needs improvement and can achieve it by adding more skilled doctors in the country. It is stated by the higher authorities that there are a handful of medical seats among the large pool of aspirants. - Corruption – The decision of NMC will increase the corruption in the Medical Colleges. Previously whenever the students faced any problem with the University, they file a complaint against the University in the Embassy of India. So Indian Embassy takes up the charge and warns the colleges that the Embassy will delist the college from the list of Medical Council. But now as per the decision of NMC, if students face any problem the hands of the Indian Embassy tied-up they can’t take any action against the University.
- Bilingual Language Colleges – There are many bilingual medical colleges in Abroad countries such as China, Russia, and others. It is difficult for the student to study in a bilingual college because partial education offered in the local language and partial in the English language. So, previously MCI has promoted only 45 medical colleges in China and delisted others because they were bilingual. Now, students can be misguided by many fraud agents to the bilingual colleges.
- Increase the number of seats – The medical colleges will increase the number of seats without obtaining permission from NMC. The colleges will take up the admission of students regardless of improving the infrastructure of the colleges just to extract money from the students.
What to look for before taking admission in any Foreign Medical College..?

The students must take a peep inside the University’s recognition and accreditation section on their official website. - The main function of NMC is to regulate the medical institutions and professionals.
- National Medical Commission conducts one common entrance exam.
