The Supreme Court passed the judgment for the vacant seats of BDS admissions to be taken after NEET 2020 Cut off reduces by 10 Percentile. In India this year we have 7000 vacant BDS seats. The bench announced the reduced percentile for the General category is 40 Percentile, SC/ST/OBC category is 30 Percentile, and PwD General category is 35 Percentile.
The bench of L. Nageswara Rao and Krishna Murari regulated the decision and said “We set aside the decision of the First Respondent dated December 30’ 2020 not to reduce the minimum marks for admission to BDS course as it suffers from the vices of illegality and irrationality”.
NEET 2020 Cut off reduced by 10 Percentile
The bench said very strictly that the BDS admission in accordance with the merit should be processed by February 18’ 2021. The Supreme Court stated that NEET 2020 Cut off will be reduced by 10 Percentile for all categories.
It has quoted that “The candidates belonging to the General category who have secured 40th Percentile shall be eligible to be considered for admission in the first year BDS course for the year 2020-21. Likewise, students belonging to the SC/ST/OBC categories shall be qualified if they have secured the 30th Percentile. In so far as general candidates with benchmark disabilities specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 they would be eligible if they have secured 35th Percentile”.
Earlier for BDS admission NEET Cut off was 50 Percentile for General category, 40 Percentile for ST/SC/OBC category and 45 Percentile for UR-PH.

NEET 2020 Seats
In the academic year 2020-21, the number of MBBS seats is 91,367 and BDS is 26,949 and AYUSH is 52,720 in total there are 1,71,036 medical seats in India. The NEET qualified candidates are 7,71,500. The ratio of seats available for students is 1:4.5, not 7. The basis for the decision is not to reduce minimum marks that are necessary for qualifying candidates is without considering these important facts into account.
The bench quoted that “We direct that the vacant seats in the first year BDS course for the academic year of 2020-21 shall be filled up from the candidates who have participated in the NEET 2020 after lowering the percentile mark by 10 percentiles”.
Supreme Court said the private medical colleges charges high fees and that’s why BDS seats are not filling up. The Supreme Court mentioned that the private medical dental colleges in the country should reduce their academic fee to encourage more admission in BDS.
